Tryptic
¿IS THIS Mi?November-December of 2019
12 in. x 24 in. canvas acrylic paint on canvas Exhibition TextI was tasked with stretching my own canvases and then making a tryptic. The prompts were 1. reflection on me as an artist 2. how my environment effects me and 3. how I effect my environment. In my 1st piece, I wanted to portray myself as a tree due to the act that most of my art pieces revolve around the idea of nature. In my 2nd piece, I decided to draw a silhouette, and within it i was going to add my biggest inspirations. My last piece is to illustrate me looking over the city and at my environment. I did this because I've noticed I often do what I see around me.

The Process:
Inspirations:
For my 1st piece which correlates with the prompt of me reflecting upon myself as an artist, I chose to paint a silhouette of person, but instead of painting the legs, I decided to paint in branches as if I were a tree or someway connected to earth. Most of my art pieces incorporate some sort of environmental aspect. This is why i chose this art piece for me inspiration. I got the idea after looking at this piece.

My inspiration was an art piece I saw a few years ago. I couldn't find the exact one, but it was very similar to these. Overall I just want to portray myself and have all of my inspirations with in my body. I wanted to have parts of the city as well as part many nature aspects like trees and clouds.

As weird as this may sound, for this piece, my inspiration was the phrase "monkey see, monkey do." If you look at the upper left hand side of the piece, you can see eyes looking over the city. what this was meant to represent was I effect my environment by not only watching over it, but by also ding some of the actions i encounter and see on a daily occurrence.

Planning
From the begging, I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do for my first prompt, but the other two were still a bit of just ideas. I knew that for my first prompt, I wanted to paint a person (myself) who is one with nature, and in this case, I would be a man with the roots of a tree. My 1st step was deciding how i wanted to approach these prompts. Once I thought about them a little, I went onto the next step which was building my canvases. I had to make and stretch 3 canvases, each on being 12 inches by 24 inches. Once I had all 3 frames assembled, I got my canvas an cut 3 pieces, each big enough to completely cover the front and hang a little once wrapped around onto the back. I stapled down my canvas sheet to the frame and that's how i created my 3 canvases. I then took them home and decided on what color I wanted to use as the background. I deiced on using blue hues. There wasn't really any reason for this besides I just liked it this way. Once that was dry, I sketched my drawings om the canvases to understand exactly what and where I would be painting. These sketches worked as a template for my pieces, and then I just began to paint.
Reflection
Overall, I am happy but disappointed with my tryptic. I didn't get my original vision, but I do think that in some ways I got something that looks even better. I really like m 1st and 3rd prompt, but i slacked of on my 2nd one and it is very noticeable.
What I Liked: I really liked my 1st piece because it felt true to me. I think i successfully portrayed myself as an artist. My 3rd piece also came out better than i expected. I was afraid with doing the 2 point perspective and potentially messing it up after painting. Overall, these two pieces didn't just feel like a grade. I really got to enjoy, have fun with it, connect, and learn. I feel that I really like being connected to nature, and this was one of those pieces that I believed might've helped me understand it a little more.
What I Wish to do Different: I feel I really messed up on this whole project. I spent more time on other work outside of art and on other projects, and it shows. I didn't get to finish my 2nd piece like i wanted too and I'm overall disappointed with myself. I feel like I cheated myself and if I do get the chance to do this over again in the future, then I would break it down and do different sections on different days to mange my time better.
Most of my inspiration actually came from past experiences, previous knowledge, and from memory of spending time in nature. I've always been an outdoorsy type of kid, so discovering new places and things was very interesting and fun for me. I would much rather be in nature than to be inside playing some video games. I feel like this has had a great role in why I love nature art so much. I like the free organic lines, but I also like a bit of straight edges. One thing I did learn was look at other artist. This is something I rarely do, but with a certain vision already in my mind, plus inspiration from other pieces, I thought of so many different things to add, and I even saw certain pieces in ways I had never seen them before. Overall, I think it was a great learning experience and a wake up call to not procrastinate and manage my time better.

ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause and effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
One direct effect I saw from my inspiration is that I really like organic free flowing lines. This is seen all over nature and in few older art movements. I also got the idea of merging the silhouette and and a tree together from the picture I found online.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding your topic?
The author is very much into the movement. His word choice, and the way I read it make me come to the conclusion that this is a movement he is comfortable and interested in.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while researching inspiration?
While researching, I realized that my environment and nature isn't much different than those around me. I didn't take the time to look for things just around me. I was looking at things from all over the world, and I realized things weren't very different from what I see here around me everyday. While researching, I also saw different aspects that I related too from around the world. I saw a lot of pictures involving people in the center of the woods or nature.
What was the central theme or idea around your inspirational research?
The central idea I had while researching mainly revolved around me as an artist. I thought about what I look for while looking for inspirations and what I surround myself by when I'm out in the world alone.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I had to make inferences while reading and looking for inspiration. I had to try and picture what the artists and authors wanted for me to imagine. I also had to make inferences based on how I could implement different perspectives and previously learned skills.
